Itinerary

Day 1 Sunday – Arrival to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (Pedal aprx. 9 mi./15 km) (L, D)

Welcome to South Africa! Upon your arrival you will immediately notice that you are in a country full of smiles. You will be collected at the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport from where you will be transported to your overnight accommodation, a mere 10 minute drive from the Airport. The afternoon will commence with a short instructional bike ride to get you acquainted with your bicycle and do a proper bike setup. On our ride you may have your first encounter with some of the animals of the African Bush, including Giraffe, Impala and Warthog. Spend your first evening in the beautiful bushveld.

Day 2 Monday – Hazyview and the Kruger National Park (Pedal aprx. 12.5 mi./20 km) (B, L, D)

After enjoying your first South African breakfast, we will drive to the small, buzzing little farming town of Hazyview. This area is surrounded by beautiful valleys and vistas which all make for a scenic yet somewhat hilly bike ride. The lifeline of Hazyview is the Sabie River which courses through the town and extends into the Kruger National Park. After checking-in at our accommodation for the next two evenings you have time to relax. This afternoon we will depart for an exciting afternoon drive in the Kruger National Park where you will have your first real taste of Africa.

Day 3 Tuesday – Full day Kruger National Park (B, L, D)

Today is your big Kruger Safari day. Although Kruger is renowned for the Big 5, it has so much more to offer. Get your cameras ready to capture the special moments in one of Africa’s largest national parks covering an area of 19,485 square kilometres. This wildlife sanctuary is like no other, its atmosphere so unique which will allow you to experience the true heartbeat of Africa. After our day in the Kruger National Park, we will return to our accommodation where we will be treated with a delicious dinner. Take time to share stories and photos of your special day in the African bush.

Day 4 Wednesday – Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve (Pedal aprx. 16 mi./25 km) (B, L, D)

Welcome to the Blyde River Canyon, the third largest and greenest canyon in the world. Our bike ride starts at Pinnacle Point where we will ready the bikes whilst you savour the magnificent views. The route follows the escarpment all the way to the world-renowned God’s Window, which is our first stop. It is said, on a clear day it is possible to see all the way to Mozambique. Our second stop for the day is the Lisbon Falls which is the highest waterfall in Mpumalanga. We will travel by bus to our lunch spot, after which we will visit the Bourke’s Luck Potholes. The potholes were formed over centuries of water flowing from the Treur and Blyde River. From here it is a short drive to the famous Three Rondavels lookout point and onto our overnight stay overlooking this escarpment.

Day 5 Thursday - Echo Caves (Pedal aprx. 16 mi./25 km) (B, L, D)

Take in a last look at the striking panorama of the Three Rondavels before we get onto our bicycles. Our route, which is mostly downhill, is surrounded by citrus farms. The Echo Caves marks the end of today’s cycling. This underground wonderland was stumbled upon by a local farmer in 1923, whilst looking for his lost cow. We will visit the cave before driving along the Abel Erasmus Pass and entering the Lowveld. Our final destination is the subtropical town of Letsitele in the Limpopo Province. Enjoy dinner at our accommodation situated next to the Letaba River. You might even have the chance to see and hear hippos.

Day 6 Friday – Letsitele and Kaross Workshop (Pedal aprx. 16 mi./25 km) (B, L, D)

The morning’s ride will start with a cycle to a citrus packhouse to experience the working of citrus farming. Letsitele is well-known for the vast amounts of citrus produced and exported. From the packhouse we will continue through Orange groves along the canal to the Kaross embroidery. Kaross was started by Irma van Rooyen to create opportunities for rural women to make a living through their embroidery skills. Indulge yourself in the beauty of the embroidery followed by a typical South African lunch. Our next two evenings’ accommodation is the Coach House. The historical Coach House Hotel is the perfect place to relax. Enjoy a massage, go for a walk or try your luck fishing at a local farm dam.

*Citrus Packhouse is open from May – October. During March & April a Macadamia nut/Avocado packhouse can be visited.

Day 7 Saturday – Haenertsburg, Wolkberg Reserve and a Local Beer Brewery (Pedal aprx. 12.5 mi./20 km) (B, L, D)

Our bicycle ride for the day follows a circular route through avocado, litchi and macadamia nut plantations. From the Coach House Hotel, we will depart for a visit to the small mountain village of Haenertsburg. Haenerstburg lies at the foot of the Iron Crown mountain range, which is part of the Wolkberg Mountains. The area is famous for its natural beauty and is known as ‘The Land of the Silver Mist’ because of the fog that often envelops the whole area. Take a stroll through this quaint village, after which we will visit a local beer brewery for an authentic South African beer tasting. Our day ends with dinner at the Coach House.

Day 8 Sunday – The Baobab Tree (Pedal aprx. 19 mi./30 km) (B, L, D)

Today we explore the area around the frontier town of Gravelotte. Our bike ride includes a visit to a 2000-year-old Baobab tree. During the Barberton gold rush in the 1880’s the giant Baobab was used as a pub, known as “The Murchison Club”. The inside of the bar was wide enough to serve up to 15 miners. Although no beer will be served inside this magnificent tree, you can still get a taste of the history and character of the pub in days gone by. The evening will be spent next to the Blyde River below the Blyde River Canyon.

Day 9 Monday – Blyde Dam (Pedal aprx. 16 mi./25 km) (B, L, D)

Today’s cycle follows the Blyde River through the Blyde River Canyon up to the Blyde dam lookout point. You will be treated to a boat cruise of the Blyde Dam to view the living Kadishi Tufa waterfall, which at 200 m is the second tallest Tufa waterfall on earth. The Blyde Dam is home to hippo and crocodile which may be spotted during our cruise. From the Blyde Dam we depart for our last experience of the African bush situated in a Private Game Reserve. The adventure begins with a late afternoon game drive in an open game viewer with an experienced guide. Dinner will be served in a boma around a fire with sounds of the African night in the background.

Day 10 Tuesday – Departure (B)

Your final day starts with a bushwalk accompanied by an experienced game ranger through Big 5 territory. Experience the bush as never before with the chance of a cheetah encounter on foot. After the bushwalk, enjoy a leisurely breakfast whilst saying farewell to your cycling companions. This will be the end of our time together. Return to your home country via the Eastgate Airport in Hoedspruit or a Private Transfer to Johannesburg.

Advice on your return journey or an extended stay is available on request.

Things to note

Changes to the itinerary

Changes to the order of the itinerary can occur due to the availability of accommodation.

A bicycle tour can be affected by changing weather conditions and therefore the itinerary of a tour may change. But don’t worry, we always have a B-plan and we will find the best solutions to offer you an equally exciting tour.

Cycling Fitness Requirements (Level 2, moderate)

We recommend our tours to everyone who has an acquired basic stamina either through using their bike as an everyday vehicle or as a leisure activity. Since we travel through such a variety of areas during this tour, the bike rides vary from day to day. We pace our tours leisurely so that there is no rush even if you push your bicycle uphill. Remember, you are on holiday and should enjoy every moment of it as well as capture the memories. So don’t feel rushed and take as many photos as you like!

The bicycle tours take place on gravel roads and asphalted roads. The asphalted roads that we cycle on are less travelled on and safe for cycling. All tours are accompanied by two guides and a support vehicle.

Additional Activities

On this tour an extra activity a day is offered a part from the cycling tour, for example: fishing, a boat ride on the Blyde Dam, a visit to citrus pack house, a bush walk, a game drive, beer tasting, a visit to the Echo Caves, a visit to the Bourke’s Luck Potholes and a visit to Kaross.

Meals

This tour offers full board (B, L, D) and we make sure to offer local dishes. If you are a vegetarian or vegan or if you have any special requests regarding your diet, for example a food intolerance, let us know in advance so that can best cater for you.

Best Travelling Time

Cycling in the summer months in South Africa is possible but then the tours need to take place very early in the mornings or late afternoons. Therefore, the best months are the slightly cooler months starting in March until October. Not only will it be a bit cooler but the chances of having rain storms are fewer.

Accommodation

Our tour offers a variety of accommodations. Our tour offers a variety of accommodation throughout the trip. The 3 and 4 star accommodation ranges from lodges, to small hotels to chalets. All of which have been chosen to offer you the uttermost comfort after each bike ride.

Guided bike rides / Safaris in South Africa

Whether by foot or game viewer, when we are exposed to wildlife we are:

– Accompanied by trained guides. These guides are well experienced as rangers and have a wide practical work experience.
– Always kept at the right distance from the wild animals in order to enable us to appreciate them but to avoid any danger.

*Please note we do not cycle within the Kruger National Park.

Malaria in South Africa

Malaria is evident in the Kruger National Park. Although there is a lower risk from April to November as it is winter and therefore drier, please contact your doctor about taking Malaria Prophylactics.

There are certain precautions you can take between dawn and dusk:

• apply insect repellent to exposed skin
• close windows and doors at night unless they are screened
