As an extension to your Hotel & Bike Safari Holiday in South Africa, we recommend the two day extension program in Johannesburg and Soweto. Included are the Airport transfers, a night in Johannesburg, and transfers to/from Soweto as well as a four hour guided city bike tour through Soweto incl. lunch, which will give you an exclusive look at the modern day history and culture of South Africa.
In Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa, the diversity of this country, its history and culture are expressed more vividly than anywhere else in the country. The story of this vibrant city in the Gauteng Province dates back to the 19th century Gold Rush. Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela once lived in the neighbouring suburbs of Soweto. The former residence is now the Nelson Mandela Museum. Nowhere else can you learn more about the apartheid and its far-reaching impact on the lives of modern South Africans than on a bike tour of Soweto. Guided by a competent local guide, this tour is included in our extension tour program.
Our transfer driver will await you at the airport on arrival in Johannesburg and will bring you to the Radisson Blue Hotel. The rest of the day if free for you to use as you please, possibly for a first orientation tour through the vibrant city of Johannesburg. We recommend asking the hotel reception for tips in regard to the top attractions in the city and for information regarding the public transport as well as the popular Hop-On-Hop-Off buses. The night is spent in the hotel in Johannesburg.
After a wholesome breakfast in the hotel, a transfer will take you to Soweto. Here a four hour long guided bike tour will take you through the township which today stands as a symbol for the former apartheid. The tour comes to an end with a traditional lunch, followed by a transfer back to Johannesburg where you can spend the rest of your day enjoying the lively city.
You will be hosted in the Radisson Blue Gautrain Hotel in the Sandton suburb in Johannesburg. This is the business centre of the city today and is an ideal starting point for sightseeing. The tourist highlights of this suburb are the famous Nelson Mandela Square and South Africa's largest shopping centre, Sandton City.
The rooms of the Radisson Blue Hotel offer Wi-Fi, a minibar, a flat screen TV, hairdryer, iron, ironing board, a desk and the possibility to prepare coffee or tea.
A special service of the hotel is a free hotel shuttle to many of the city's sights. You can visit the Market Theatre, the Johannesburg Art Gallery, the Museum of Africa or the Museum of Apartheit.
