The late Ottoman Empire also left impressive traces that can still be seen in the city today. From the port’s lighthouse to the Yiali Mosque, the large fortress to the classicist market hall; Chania has much to offer. Sandy beaches lying just outside of the city as well as the varied surroundings including the Akrotiri Peninsula and the Balos Lagoon offer wonderful hiking opportunities and promise an eventful and relaxing extended vacation.
