Bike & Boat Gulf of Corinth & Ionian Islands

Bike & Boat Gulf of Corinth & Ionian Islands

(8 Days/7 Nights, approx. 150 km )

Join us on a fascinating journey through time and culture! This bike & boat tour through the Gulf of Corinth and the Ionian Islands combines the Greek mainland with the impressive islands of the Ionian Sea.

For one week, travelling by bicycle and on the two-masted motor sailer Panagiota, we experience first-hand the cultural and scenic diversity of Greece. Famous sites such as Delphi, where the ancient Greeks once consulted the oracle, or Aegina, where the white temple of Aphaia gleams high above the sea are some of the highlights of the tour.

The passage through the Corinth Canal, an artificial seaway connecting the Gulf of Corinth with the Aegean, will surely become an unforgettable memory.

In the archipelago of the Ionian Islands, you see Greece at its greenest. An unspoiled landscape and centuries of Venetian influence characterize this still fairly unknown group of islands. The crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea glittering in all shades of blue, the mountainous landscape of Ithaca and the bird-sanctuary island of Lefkas, the small island of Paxos densely covered in olive groves – all guarantee a wonderfully relaxing vacation.

Please be aware that this cycling trip is offered in two directions: From Athens to Corfu and from Corfu to Athens!

This itinerary has been updated for 2022. The tour itinerary remains unchanged, prices and services may change compared to 2021.

Itinerary

FROM ATHENS TO CORFU: 1st Day (Sat) Athens/Piraeus (Marina Zeas) - (Embarkation)

Individual arrival at Marina Zeas (Piraeus).  It is possible to check in on the Panagiota from 2 pm. Dinner on board and overnight stay in the harbour of Piraeus.

2nd Day (Sun) Piraeus – Aegina Island – Corinth Canal – Galaxidi (aprx. 22 mi./35 km)

In the morning we sail to Aegina, an island famous for its pistachios even beyond Greek borders. Here our first cycle tour takes us to the exceptionally well-preserved temple of Aphaia, enthroned high above the azure sea. In the afternoon, we sail through the Isthmus of Corinth, completed in 1893, though plans for its construction date back to Julius Caesar. This 3.9 mi./6.3 km long, 79 ft./24 m wide, and 26 ft./8 m deep canal connects the Aegean Sea with the Gulf of Corinth and saves travellers sailing from Athens to Corinth the 258 mi./400 km long trip around the whole Peloponnese peninsular. If weather conditions are fine, we continue sailing to Galaxidi, otherwise overnight stay in or near Corinth.

3rd Day (Mon) Galaxidi - Delphi – Nafpaktos - Mesolongi

In the morning, a transfer shuttle collects us from Galaxidi and takes us to the famous ancient site of Delphi, which rests at the foot of the Parnassus mountain range. It was here the ancient Greeks came to worship Apollo, the god of the light, and to consult the oracle. A visit to Delphi is a truly unforgettable experience not only due to the many temples, treasuries, the well-preserved theatre, and the stadium, but also thanks to the incredible hill-side location and views of the surrounding mountains. In the afternoon, the bus takes us to the harbour of Nafpaktos where we have time for lunch and a short stroll through the beautiful town before another short bus ride brings us to Mesolongi. The boat meets us here and we stay the night.

4th Day (Tue) Mesolongi – Ithaca Island (aprx. 28 mi./44 km)

In the morning, we leave Mesolongi and cycle through the rich alluvial plains of the Evinos River – one of the most important agricultural regions in Greece. During the tour, we take a break at Krioneri Beach for a coffee and swim before returning to Mesolongi. In the afternoon we can relax on board the boat as we cruise to Vathy on Ithaca Island.

5th Day (Wed) Ithaca Island (aprx. 12 or 17 mi./20 or 28 km)

In the morning, we head out on a bike tour on the Ithaca Island. This hilly island with its spectacular scenery is said to have been home of the mythical king Odysseus. We start today’s tour in Vathy, and during the ride we get to enjoy the special character of the Ionian Islands off beaten tourist track: gnarled olive trees, crystal clear water and friendly islanders – time appears to stand still on Ithaca. From Frikes we cruise to Nidri on Lefkas and stay overnight in the little island port.

6th Day (Thu) Nidri – Lefkas town – Paxos Island (aprx. 17 mi./27 km)

Today we cycle through beautiful olive groves to the hidden water falls of Nidri before continuing through the mountain world of Lefkas to the island’s capital of the same name. Here the Panagiota awaits us, taking us to Paxos Island in the afternoon. We spend the night in the lovely natural harbour of Gaios.

7th Day (Fri) Paxos Island (aprx. 14 mi./23 km)

Paxos, the smallest of the seven Ionian Islands, is so densely covered in olive trees the whole island seems to glisten a wonderful silver green colour. Our morning tour leads us around the whole island. There is plenty of time to enjoy a swim in the sea at one of the many beaches. In the afternoon, the Panagiota takes us to Corfu. The last evening on board concludes with a communal dinner and last get-together in a cosy atmosphere with crew, fellow travellers, and tour guides.

8th Day (Sat) Corfu Island (Disembarkation)

After breakfast check-out and individual return home or extended stay on Corfu Island.

FROM CORFU TO ATHENS: 1st Day (Sat) Corfu (Embarkation)

Individual arrival by plane and subsequent transfer to the ship. It is possible to check in on the Panagiota from 2 pm onwards. Dinner on board and overnight stay on Corfu.

2nd Day (Sun) Paxos Island (aprx. 15 mi./23 km)

Cast off! In the morning we sail to Paxos, the smallest of the seven Ionian Islands. This tiny island is so densely covered in olive trees the whole island seems to glisten a wonderful silver green colour. Our morning tour leads us around the whole island. There is plenty of time to enjoy a swim in the sea at one of the many beaches. Later, we can enjoy the evening in a cosy tavern in the unique natural harbour of Gaios! Overnight stay on Paxos.

3rd Day (Mon) Lefkas town – Nidri (aprx. 19 mi./30 km)

Our day begins with a longer sail to the town of Lefkas. During the crossing we pass by the original swing bridge which connects the island of Lefkas to the Greek mainland. Today’s tour leads us across the island’s fascinating mountain landscape to the lively harbour of Nidri. The island of Skorpios, once the private haven of shipping magnate Aristotle Socrates Onassis, can be seen from our mooring. The night is spent in Nidri.

4th Day (Tue) Ithaca Island - Mesolongi (aprx. 12 mi./20 km)

Early in the morning we cruise to the island of Ithaca for our day’s bike tour. This hilly island with its spectacular scenery is said to have been home of the mythical king Odysseus. During the ride we get to enjoy the special character of the Ionian Islands off beaten tourist track: gnarled olive trees, crystal clear water and friendly islanders – time appears to stand still on Ithaca. We then board the boat once more for a longer sail to Mesolongi in the Corinthian Gulf, where we spend the night.

5th Day (Wed) Mesolongi - Galaxidi (aprx. 28 mi./44km)

In the morning, we leave Mesolongi and cycle through the rich alluvial plains of the Evinos River – one of the most important agricultural regions in Greece. In the afternoon we can relax on board the boat as we cruise under the Rio-Antirrio bridge to the picturesque harbour of Galaxidi, where we spend the night.

In the afternoon, the bus takes us back to Galaxidi. We then continue by boat and sail through the Isthmus of Corinth. Though the canal was completed in 1893, plans for its construction date back to Julius Caesar. 7th Day (Fri) Aegina Island – Piraeus/Marina Zeas (aprx. 19 mi./30 km)

Our last cycling tour is on Aegina, an island famous for its pistachios even beyond Greek borders. During our tour we visit the exceptionally well-preserved temple of Aphaia, enthroned high above the azure sea. Extended stay

Extend your stay in Athens or on Corfu or Santorini!

Would you like to be in the vicinity for a few days before your boat- and bike trip or would you like to spend a few days in Greece after your trip? Then we can recommend some accomodations in Athens or on Corfu or our additional package in Athens to you.

ATHENS

The 2004 Olympics brought about a very positive change to the face of the lively 5-million strong metropolis. Large sections of the inner city were transformed into pedestrian areas and a large archaeological park was created, that stretches from the Acropolis across ancient Agora to Kerameikos, the old potters’ and cemetery district. Enjoy an unforgettable stroll through the winding alleys of the Plaka, the charming Old Town district, where you should not only stop to admire the many different souvenirs available, but should also make yourself comfortable in one of the countless cafés.

The accommodation facilities we recommend are situated in the centre of Athens, allowing you to reach most of the tourist sights by foot.

CORFU

Corfu is the largest island in the Ionian archipel and its diverse landscape, countless beaches, turquiose-coloured sea and many sightseeing attractions are impressive. The beautiful landscape in the north of the island, with its coast of sandstone cliffs at Sidari, attracts tourists like a magnet.

Corfu’s capital – also named Corfu – is considered one of the most beautiful towns in all of Greece. To stroll through the lively lanes of the historical centre with its Venetian flair, where countless small shops offer a colourful profusion of wares, is a true holiday highpoint. Also impressive are the New and Old Fortress, just as photogenic as the monastery island of Vlacherna- connected by a dam to the main island – and nearby Mouse Island (Pontikonissi).

Austria’s great empress Sissi already described Corfu as the island of her dreams when she came there to improve her delicate health. In 1890 – 1892, she had an extraordinary palace built 7 km south of Corfu Town, calling it Achilleion, after Achilles, the legendary Homeric hero. It is today one of the main tourist attractions.

So it is certainly always worthwhile to extend your holiday on Corfu: No matter whether you are interested in culture, love hiking or exploring the island by car, or simply want to relax on the beach – Corfu has something for everybody.

SANTORINI

Santorini is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean, and for good reason too: The queen of the Aegean welcomes her visitors with picture book images of Cycladic charm. A powerful volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC created a truly distinctive landscape on the island: A breath-taking caldera and colourful cliffs into which the white, cube shaped houses of the island’s main towns, Fira and Oia, are nestled. In addition to this beauty, Santorini has still more to offer such as the famous archaeological site of Akrotiri (also called the Pompeii of the Aegean), where the lives of the prehistoric islanders were preserved for time immemorial on the day the volcano erupted. Alternatively, you could enjoy a swim at the Red Beach, take a boat trip through the caldera, hike along the crater rim or visit one of the many wineries. You could hardly ask for more a variety filled vacation!

Things to note

Language aboard

Due to our international audience all Islandhopping tours are conducted bilingually, in English and German.

Time zone

Please note that Greece is on Eastern European (Summer) time, i.e. GM(S)T + 2 hours.

Itinerary changes

We reserve the right to make changes to the planned itinerary due to changing wind and weather conditions as well as organizational requirements.

Requirements (Level 3)

Participants require a high level of fitness for this tour. The daily routes vary in length 12 – 31 mi./20 – 50 km and lead through hilly to mountainous terrain. The tours can, however, be completed without any time constraints. Participants will also need to master long and steep climbs, during which it is of course bikes can be pushed. Most of the roads we cycle along are asphalted and with low traffic. You are free to set aside a half or full day to swim or spend time on board the boat, instead of taking a planned cycle-tour.

Group riding pace & Requirement to wear a helmet

On our regular cycling tours the riding pace is determined by the cyclists on regular bicycles. We ask guests who have reserved an e-bike to be mindful of this and to acknowledge that also the regular cyclists need time to rest and longer to climb the hills. Thank you for your understanding.

Helmets are mandatory on our bike tours. It is advised to bring your own, well fitted, helmet with you as our rental helmet numbers are limited (reservation required).

Bringing Children

We believe that only children in a good physical condition and with a minimum age of 10 and previous bicycle tour experience are able to master the cycle tours on their own strength. Please note that the minimum height for a rental bike is 1.30 m (4.3 ft.) for hybrid bicycles.

Internet availability

The Panagiota does not offer a WiFi connection. If you need to connect to the internet during the tour, we recommend to take your portable electronic device to a cafe or bar somewhere in the harbour. Free WiFi is on offer almost everywhere. If you order something to eat or drink, then you are able to use the WiFi to your hearts content.

Bringing private bikes & EXCLUSION of private E-BIKES

The tour which you have booked requires a bike with a fully functional set of gears. Islandhopping can offer you high quality, fully serviced rental bikes perfect for the terrain of this tour.

Should you however wish to bring your own hybrid or MTB with you, please make sure to check the condition of your breaks, gears, and tires and don’t forget to bring along a puncture repair kit and the essential spare parts for your bike (e.g. brake pads and tubes). Your bike should be in prefect mechanical working order.

We do not allow private e-bikes on board of our boats. This decision has been made due to health and safety regulations. If you wish to ride an e-bike for the duration of your tour, please get in touch with us about the rental options.

We do not recommend bringing along private road bikes, as the thin tires are not suitable for some of the road surfaces encountered on the tours.

Liability disclaimer: Radurlaub Zeitreisen GmbH. Will not be held liable for any damages caused to private bikes during loading, unloading or other logisitical handling thereof.

Our Ships

Please do not forget that the ship is your hotel as well as a machine, which has to be maintained and operated – day and night. A certain level of noise is therefore inevitable.

Catering

The on-board chef is a member of the crew and prepares the breakfast and one or two warm meals a day. A packed lunch instead of lunch on board is possible as well on our tour. The catering starts with the dinner on the arrival day and ends with the breakfast on the departure day.
