Sail 6 Bike Tour South Danish Archipelago & German Baltic Sea

Our sail & bike tours on the barkentine Atlantis are a whole new way in which to discover the Danish south Sea. On board of the Atlantis we will navigate our way to a number of harbour towns and quiet bays, followed by the active exploration of beautiful landscapes by bike. On the bike tours, our tour guide will lead us through beautiful settings and to the most important local sights. In preparation for each cycle tour, we will be informed of the distance and difficulty of each tour, enabling us to make an informed decision as to whether or not we wish to take part on the cycling tour or if we would prefer to navigate our way to the next destination on board of the Atlantis. Our South Sea is what the Danes proudly call this enchanting mix of endless sandy beaches, brilliantly-white chalk cliffs, countless islands and small harbour towns with colourful houses. It is with pleasure that we are able to offer a journey through this magnificent world on board a sailing boat and bike.

1st Day Kiel-Holtenau/Germany (Embarkation)
Crew & tall ship Atlantis await you at the harbour Kiel-Holtenau on the first evening. Check in at 8 pm and a joyous get together with the first evening meal.
2nd Day Kiel-Holtenau, Sailing to Bagenkop on the island of Langeland (approx. 15 km)
Our first crossing takes us to the Danish island of Langeland. After enjoying our first breakfast on board the Atlantis, we set sail relishing the fresh sea breeze on our first crossing of the week. Around 3 pm we arrive at the tranquil harbour of Bagenkop, situated on the southern tip of the island. After a short briefing on cycle safety and cycling in groups, we head out on an afternoon cycling tour and gain a first impression of the country and its people. Along the way, we pass Langelandfoort, the site of a Danish control post during the Cold War. We then continue to a privately owned lighthouse, where we have time to enjoy a walk along the beach. With a little luck, we may even spot some of Langeland’s wild horses along the way. We spend the evening on board the Atlantis in Bagenkop harbour.
3nd Day Bagenkop - Svendborg
(approx. 55 km/130 m elevation)
After breakfast, we hop on our bikes and cycle northwards over the island of Langeland. Along the way we will experience a characteristic feature of the island: Over a thousand hat-shaped hills which formed during the last ice age scatter the island making for an undulating ride. We leave the island of Langeland over a bridge at Rudkøbing and cross the small island of Siø. Another bridge leads us over to the slightly larger island of Tåsinge and take a break by Valdemars Slot (castle) and the lovely village of Troense. Another bridge takes us to one of Denmark’s most beautiful cities and our final destination of the day, Svendborg on the island of Funen.
4th Day Fåborg - Svendborg
approx. 48 km / 220 m elevation)
After breakfast, we enjoy a leisurely cycle through quiet residential areas towards the coast of Funen. The first half of the bike tour is predominantly flat and includes many stretches along the sea. From here we have beautiful views over to the island of Tåsinge and the numerous boats that sail the narrow passage between the two islands. Approximately halfway through cycle we leave the coastal region and begin our climb up into the so-called Funen Alps. But not to worry: Even being generous, these Alps claim a hight of just 100 m/330 ft. Our tour leads past large farmsteads and impressive manor houses. You may even find your next Christmas tree along the way as we pass the large tree nurseries growing the popular Danish Nordmann firs. Our day draws to a close with a crossing through the island world of the Danish South Sea as we head from Fåborg to Søby on the island of Ærø.
5th Day Svendborg – Søby (Aeroskobing)
(approx. 36 km /200 m elevation)
Today we discover the enchanting island of Ærø by bike. The charm of this small seafaring island will transport you back in time. By the early afternoon, we reach Æroskobing, where we can marvel at the beautiful collections of ships in bottles and explore the picturesque old town. Small, colourful houses, an idyllic marketplace with water pumps, and charming half-timbered houses create the perfect atmosphere to relax and unwind. We then cycle back to Søby where the Atlantis awaits us for our long crossing back to Kiel Holtenau. The Captains Dinner in the evening is the cherry on the top of an exciting day.
6th Day Kiel-Holtenau, Sailing day (Farewell/Disembarkation)
After breakfast in Kiel-Holtenau, it's time to pack our bags and say goodbye to our fellow sailors and the crew of the Atlantis. Check out from 9 am. With a suitcase full of memories and a camera full of photos, it's time to head home.

Accommodation

Atlantis (Tall Ships)

The Atlantis is a guaranteed eye catcher in every harbor. Built in 1905 and christened Elbe 2, the Atlantis served faithfully as a light vessel in the North Sea, Germany. Afterwards she was elaborately restorated as a tallship for passenger cruises.

The renovation featured a classy salon, a spacious upper deck including seats and a cocktail bar as well as 16 comfortable air conditioned guest cabins including a shower and WC. A true highlight and centerpiece of the Atlantis is the open air bar, where the dedicated crew conjure creative beverages and cocktails for the guests. Mealtimes are…

Important information

Characteristic feature of the Tallship Atlantis

Our Tallship mostly does not fit into small fishing harbors and therefore spends the majority of their nights on anchor. This means that a dinghy transfer is necessary to get to land. Surefootedness and a certain degree of agility are required to get on and off the boat. Needless to say, our tour guides will lend you a helping hand. In general: Wind, swell and tidal differences have a significant influence on a Tallship journey.

Spoken language

Due to our international audience all Islandhopping tours are conducted bilingually, in English and German.

Itinerary changes

We reserve the right to make changes to the itinerary, depending on wind and weather conditions or organizational requirements. Sometimes the tour will be run in reverse order. Our tours are dependent on weather conditions and the final decision is that of the captain. You are free to set aside a half or full day to swim or spend time on board the boat, instead of taking a planned bike-tour.

Requirements

Level 2

Tours are of a moderate difficulty level and are generally fairly flat, ranging in length between of 15 to 38 miles/25 to 55 km on remote asphalt roads. Unpaved country roads are cycled at times. Main roads with heavy traffic and no separate cycle paths are only ever used in exceptional cases and for short distances. Long and steep climbs are rare, however, hilly countryside with regular ascents and descents do occur. Depending on the direction of the wind, there may be times where cycling into a strong headwind in necessary.

Guided group pace

On most of our Bike & Boat tours you can choose between a hybrid bike and an e-bike. However, the guided group pace is based on the speed of the hybrid bike cyclists. Those who rent an e-bike on a hybrid bike tour are asked to show consideration for those who ride without electronic assistance. Hybrid bike cyclists need more breaks and more time to cycle the hills. We thank you for your understanding.

Requirement to wear a helmet

Helmets are mandatory on our bike tours. It is advised to bring your own, well fitted, helmet with you as our rental helmet numbers are limited (reservation required).

Bringing children

We believe that only children in a good physical condition and with a minimum age of 10 and previous bicycle tour experience are able to master the cycle tours with their own strength. Please note that the minimum height for a rental bike is 1.50 m (5 ft.) for hybrid bikes.

For the best tour experience with children, we recommend our Multi-Adventure Cruises in Croatia or Greece. We are convinced that these itineraries provide the best all-round experience for each individual family member.

Bringing private bikes & exclusion of private e-bikes

The tour which you have booked requires a bike with a fully functional set of gears. Islandhopping can offer you high quality, fully serviced rental bikes perfect for the terrain of this tour.

Should you however wish to bring your own hybrid bicycle with you, please make sure to check the condition of your breaks, gears, and tires and don’t forget to bring along a puncture repair kit and the essential spare parts for your bike (e.g. brake pads and spare tubes). Your bike should be in prefect mechanical working order.

We do not allow private e-bikes on board of our boats. This decision has been made due to health and safety regulations. If you wish to ride an e-bike for the duration of your tour, please get in touch with us about the rental options.

We do not recommend bringing along private road bikes, as the thin tires are not suitable for some of the road surfaces encountered on the tours.

Liability disclaimer: Radurlaub Zeitreisen GmbH. Will not be held liable for any damages caused to private bikes during loading, unloading or other logistical handling thereof.

Luggage

Please bring your personal belongings in foldable travel bags. Please avoid hard protective cases. They will be too heavy to store within your cabin.

Catering

This tour includes full board. All days will include brakfast, lunch and dinner on board.

Payment on board

Payment by card is not possible on board

Noise on board

Please do not forget that the ship is your hotel as well as a machine, which has to be maintained and operated – day and night. A certain level of noise is therefore inevitable.
