Patagonia: A region shared

Argentina and Chile share the cross-border region of Patagonia, located at the tip of South America. The Andes divide this spectacular region into Western Patagonia, which belongs mainly to Chile, and the predominantly Argentinean Eastern Patagonia. Tierra del Fuego, located south of the Strait of Magellan, forms the southern border of the region. Patagonia is very sparsely populated and offers a great variety of different landscapes whose beauty, at a glance, answers the question as to why you should visit! From glaciers to grass steppes, lake landscapes to volcanic mountains, rain forests to storm-weathered coasts, there is something spectacular to see at every turn. The magnificent Lanin, Los Arrayanes and Nahuel Haupo National Parks count towards the many must-see places in Patagonia. They alone are worth the long journey to this stunning corner of the world. Discover this spectacular landscape on our “Hotel & MTB Fire and Ice" Tour.

Chile: a country for explorers and adventurers

The origin of the word Chile is still unclear. The most common explanation is that the word is derived from the language of the Aymara tribe. In this language, the world chilli means “the land where the world ends”. Today, the country of Chile is one of the most economically and socially stable and prosperous of all the countries is South America having a high-income economy as well as a high standard of living. Due to its unique geographical characteristics, almost all the world’s climate zones can be found in the country. A round trip through Chile takes us from the driest desert on earth in the north to millennia-old glaciers in the south, through magical forests and lakes to the feet of impressive volcanoes, and islands ripe with legend. A holiday in Chile offers a variety of exciting activities alongside its spectacular nature. Facts about Patagonia

Best Time to Visit Patagonia

The weather in Patagonia is very unpredictable. Sunshine and a light breeze can very quickly turn to heavy showers and strong gusts of wind. It is said that in Patagonia you can experience four seasons in one day. It is therefore advisable to always be prepared with appropriate wind- and rainproof gear. While Western Patagonia (Chile) has the humid, cool climate, characteristic of the western south Andes, Eastern Patagonia (Argentina) has a dry climate.

Western Patagonia has a lot of rainfall while the east is protected, lying in the rain shadow of the south Andes. Strong winds blow all year round and are characteristic of the whole region. Patagonia falls predominantly into the moderate warm zone.

The average annual temperature is 6°C (43°F). The highest temperatures are recorded during the summer month of January with an average of 11°C (52°F). Temperatures vary greatly throughout Patagonia, with the altitude of an area playing a clear influence. In the north, for example, temperatures can climb to 20°C (68°F) in January and February but the further south you go, the colder it gets.

For security reasons, cash machines should only be used during business hours. It is not advised to carry large amounts of cash on you personally. Costs in Chile are relatively high compared to other South American countries. Therefore, you should ensure that you have a sufficient travel budget. It is best to travel with US dollars, as these are accepted for exchange throughout Chile.

Vaccinations

We advise you to consult a GP (or a doctor of tropical medicine) as early as possible before you travel (at least 2 months before departure). Make sure to inform yourself of any relevant vaccinations well in advance to travel. Some vaccinations must be administered a number of times in progression before providing full protection.

Special vaccination protection is not mandatory for this trip; however, we advise you have the usual vaccinations against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough, which can be administered as a combination vaccination. A booster is required every 10 years.

We also recommend a TBE vaccination. This protects against an inflammatory disease of the meninges, transmitted most commonly via tick bites.

The tropical institutes also recommend vaccinations against hepatitis B, hepatitis A, typhoid, rabies, measles and yellow fever for travel in Argentina (not mandatory). When leaving Argentina, the yellow fever vaccination may be required if you continue your journey to a third country.

The recommendations from the tropical institutes for Chile are vaccinations against tetanus, diphtheria, hepatitis A (and possibly hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies and measles).
