Hotel & MTB Patagonia Andes Crossing

Hotel & MTB Patagonia Andes Crossing

(12 Days/11 Nights, approx. 470 km )

Our tour of Northern Patagonia ventures into both Argentina and Chile, following the path ‘less travelled’ through some of the most remote parts of the Andean Lake District. This tour allows for a truly authentic experience in an area of Patagonia that is only just opening its eyes to tourism.

This Hotel & MTB tour leads through National Parks such as Lanin and Nahuel Huapi passing wonderful highlights such as Circuito Chico and Cerro Catedral. The Cordoba Pass and the Villarrica National Park are just waiting to be explored. We bike through the Tromen Pass (1,105 m), the homeland of the Mapuche people, and stroll through charming towns such as Pucón and San Martín de los Andes.

Working with the best means that our groups, min. 4 – max. 18 bikers, can enjoy first-rate guiding, full-time vehicle assistance and charming accommodations.

MTB Level 2

Daily tours through hilly terrain with lengths between 20 – 44 mi./30 – 70 km and trails up to S1 on the Single Trail Scale. The fitter you are, the more you will enjoy your trip. We suggest that you adopt a sensible weekly exercise routine, gradually increasing your distances and/or terrain difficulty as the travel date approaches. We also recommend a number of long rides through hilly terrain to ensure you are physically capable of taking part in this tour. Biking is obviously the best activity to prepare for this trip, but running, squash, swimming etc. are also good for developing aerobic fitness and stamina. The hilly terrain we cycle which includes some steeper climbs and long downhills require participants to have good physical conditioning. The terrain is very diverse and variable: technical and demanding single trails alternate with wide gravel and volcanic paths as well as some asphalt stretches at times. This tour takes place at a relatively heigh altitude though it does not require any significant adaptation to altitude. We would not expect any altitude issues on this trip, but still recommend listening to any instructions given. During the southern hemisphere summer, we experience daytime temperatures of approx. 18 – 20 ˚C (64 – 68 ˚F). In northern Patagonia, the dry season spans from November to April, but rain can occur at any time of year in the Lake District. For most of this holiday, we can rely on the support of our vehicles. Each morning when moving to different overnight accommodation, our luggage is loaded into and transported by the support vehicle, which follows the group during the day’s ride. Should a member of the group feel they need a break from biking, they are more than welcome to ride in the support vehicle for a stretch of the tour.

Single-Trail Classification

So that you are well prepared for your bike tour at Islandhopping, and that you know which technical grade you should await to be confronted by, we have comprised a classification for all single trails, which you will ride. The difficulty levels included in our classification coincide with the Singeltrail-scale which can be found at here.

Blue (easy, S0 – S1): small obstacles such as small roots, small stones, some erosion, gradients of up to 40 %, loose surfaces, tight corners but no hairpins, obstacles can be rolled over. Skilful braking and weight shift required, riding while standing.

Red (medium, S2): loose surfaces, larger stones and roots, steps and shallow stairs, gradients of up to 70 %, light hairpins. Constant readiness to brake, shift of centre weight to overcome obstacles, accurate braking, consistent body tension required.

Black (difficult, S3 – S5): blocked single trails, many large boulders and roots, smooth/slippery surfaces, loose scree slopes, large steps/drops, extremely steep gradients of over 70 %, tight hairpins. Expert level of bike control/handling required.

Helmets & protectors

Helmets are mandatory on our bike tours. We advise you to bring your own, well fitted, helmet with you as our rental helmet numbers are limited (reservation required). Furthermore, we recommend bikers carry arm and leg protectors during the bike tours.
