Hotel & MTB Patagonia Andes Crossing

Hotel & MTB Patagonia Andes Crossing

(8 Days/7 Nights, approx. 250 km )

Our tour of Northern Patagonia ventures into both Argentina and Chile, following the path ‘less travelled’ through some of the most remote parts of the Andean Lake District. Using our local agent’s wealth of knowledge, we have set up a bike tour that takes us off the beaten track to explore this region’s many natural treasures.

The result is a truly authentic experience in a part of Patagonia that is only just opening its eyes to tourism. The region is characterized by its backcountry style, with a rustic charm, set within a stunning Andean landscape which wouldn’t be out of place in a Jurassic Park movie.

We will bike through the Tromen Pass (1,105 m) with the araucaria (monkey-puzzle) trees framing the peak of the towering Lanin Volcano. The Lanin National Park, with its mesmerizing turquoise lakes, picturesque farms and tumbling rivers. We enjoy a thrilling descent into Chile, biking through the homelands of the Mapuche people and stroll through beautiful and charming towns like Pucón or San Martín de los Andes, a little bit further south. Our journey then continues southwards where we will visit the unique Huilo-Huilo Biosphere Reserve, before taking the ferry from Puerto Fuy, across Lake Pirihueico, and cross the Hua Hum Pass (659 m) into Argentina.

Working with the best means that our groups, min. 4 – max. 18 bikers, can enjoy first-rate guiding, full-time vehicle assistance and charming accommodations. This tour is combinable with our 6-day Hotel & MTB Patagonia 7-Lakes trip.

MTB Level 2

Daily tours in hilly terrain at distances of 22 – 44 mi./35 bis 70 km and trails according to Single trail classification up to S1. The better conditioned you are the more you will enjoy your trip. We suggest that you adopt a sensible weekly exercise routine, gradually increasing your distances and/or terrain difficulty as the travel date approaches. We also recommend a number of long rides in hilly country to ensure you are physically capable of taking part in this tour. Biking is obviously the best activity to prepare for this trip, but running, squash and swimming are also good for developing aerobic fitness and stamina. The hilly terrain with some steep climbs as well as long downhills require a good physical condition. The terrain is very diverse and variable: technical and demanding single trails alternate with wide gravel and volcanic roads and sometimes asphalt stretches. This tour takes place at relatively heights and does not involve any significant adaptation to altitude. We would not expect any altitude issues with this trip, but still recommend listening to any instructions given. During the southern hemisphere summer, we will experience daytime temperatures of approx.18 – 20 degrees Celsius. From November to April is the dry season in northern Patagonia, but rain can occur at any time of year in the Lake District. For most of this holiday, we can rely on the support of our vehicles. Each morning when moving to different overnight accommodation, our main luggage will be loaded onto the support vehicle, which will follow the group on the day ride. The support vehicle will pick up any group members who wish to take a break from biking.

Single-Trail Classification

So that you are well prepared for your bike tour at Islandhopping, and that you know which technical grade you should await to be confronted by, we have comprised a classification for all single trails, which you will ride. The difficulty levels included in our classification coincide with the Singeltrail-scale found at (

Blue (easy, S0 – S1): small obstacles such as small roots, small stones, small gully erosion, gradients of up to 40 %, loose surfaces, tight corners but no hairpins, skillful braking and weight transfer required, riding while standing, obstacles can be rolled over.

Red (medium, S2): loose surfaces, larger stones and roots, steps and shallow stairs, gradients of up to 70 %, light hairpins, permanent braking readiness, displacement of center of mass to overcome obstacles, accurate braking, permanent body tension.

Black (heavy, S3 – S5): blocked single trails, many large boulders and roots, smooth/slippery surfaces, loose scree slopes, large steps/drops, extremely steep gradients of over 70 %, tight hairpins, expert level of bike control/handling.

Helmets & protectors

Helmets are mandatory on all bike tours. Please bring your own helmet. Furthermore, we recommend riders to carry arm and leg protectors during the bike tours.
