Sail & Bike Danish South Funen Archipelago & Baltic Sea

Sail & Bike Danish South Funen Archipelago & Baltic Sea (7 Days/6 Nights, approx. 160 km )

Our sail & bike tours on the barkentine Atlantis are a whole new way in which to discover the Danish south Sea.

On board of the Atlantis we will navigate our way to several harbour towns and quiet bays, followed by the active exploration of beautiful landscapes by bike. More often than not, the boat will continue sailing, whilst you are busy spinning your pedals, in order to meet you at your next destination. In some harbours or bays, in which the Atlantis cannot dock, the crew will ferry you to land with the ships tender.

On the bike tours, your tour guide will lead you through beautiful settings and to the most important local sights. In preparation for each cycle tour, you will be informed of the distance and difficulty of each tour, enabling you to make an informed decision as to whether or not you wish to take part on the cycling tour or if you would prefer to navigate your way to the next destination on board of the Atlantis.

Our South Sea is what the Danes proudly call this enchanting mix of endless sandy beaches, brilliantly-white chalk cliffs, countless islands and small harbour towns with colourful houses. It is with pleasure that we are able to offer a journey through this magnificent world on board a sailing boat and bike.

Good to know: All our tours in Denmark are operated by a partner tour operator, experts in the field, and can vary in their execution in comparison to traditional Islandhopping tours.

2nd Day Kiel-Holtenau , Sailing to Sonderborg (aprx. 22 mi./35 km)

„Cast off!“ After breakfast we hoist the sails and prepare our way to Sonderborg. After the first breakfast aboard the Atlantis, we set our sails and enjoy the crossing. At 12 o’clock we reach Sonderborg. After a short introduction about cycling in groups, you will get your first impression of the country and its people on an afternoon bike tour, taking us past a typical Dutch wind mill called mill of Düppel (Dybbøl Mølle). We spend the evening in the harbor of Sonderborg close to the famous Sonderborg castle.

3rd Day Sonderborg - Fåborg (aprx. 22 mi./50 km, aprx. 1,300 ft./400 m elevation)

Today’s cycling tour leads us to Fåborg and involves a short crossing on a ferry boot. Our first destination is Fynshav, where we take the ferry boat to Bøjden on the island of Funen. Once ashore we continue cycling through lovely picturesque villages all the way to Fåborg with its timber-framed houses and narrow lanes.

4th Day Fåborg - Svendborg (aprx. 24 mi./38 km, aprx. 1,200 ft./360 m elevation)

Our cycling tour starts in Fåborg and leads to Svendborg. Our ride takes us over rolling hills and along vast sandy beaches. We get to Svendborg in the afternoon, the second largest town of Funen. Half of all the Danish wooden ship were built here in around 1850. Admire some of the constructions while strolling around the harbor and enjoying the evening ambience.

5th Day Svendborg – Søby (Aeroskobing) (aprx. 24 mi./38 km, aprx. 1,200 ft./360 m elevation)

Our day starts by sailing from Svendborg to Søby on the island of Ærø. As soon as we are ashore our cycling tour begins. The tiny seafarer island Ærø has a unique charm and takes us back in time as if time had stood still for the past 100 years. Tiny little houses, often timber-framed, and an idyllic market place with old water pumps are surrounded by a rolling rural countryside. At around noon we arrive in Ærøskøbing where you will find yourself in a picturesque town surrounded by ships in a bottle.

6th Day Søby – Kiel-Holtenau, Sailing day

We lift anchor early in the morning and head towards Kiel-Holtenau. After a relaxed breakfast, the helmsman gives us a short introduction to the art of sailing and explains the most important functions of the rigging. Now sailing enthusiasts can take an active part in the sailing of the ship. For those who would rather watch, it’s enough to enjoy the fresh sea breeze or to settle down with a book they have always wanted to read.

7th Day Kiel-Holtenau (Farewell/Disembarkation)

After an extensive breakfast it’s time to say Goodbye to crew, ship and travel companions. Check out until 9 am. With packed bags, reminiscing memeories and with a lot of pictures on your memory card you return home.

Partner tour & Itinerary changes

This tour is a partner tour operated by the Tall Ship Company; in charge of the organisation of this tour. The way of operation may vary from our Islandhopping  trips.

Wind and weather conditions influence the itinerary significantly and may require changes. If necessary we use motor power. It’s up to the captain. But it is for sure that we will explore the German coast of the Baltic Sea and the islands of the Danish South Funen Archipelago wherever the winds may blow.

Requirements (Level 2-3)

Moderate tours in a hilly countryside with stages of 6 to 38 miles (10 to 55 km) on remote asphalt roads. In some places even unpaved country lanes are used. Main roads with dense traffic and no cycleway are only used in short exceptional cases. Long and steep ascents hardly ever occur, however, a hilly countryside with regular ups and downs must be considered. Depending on the wind direction we must accept a strong headwind from time to time.

This tour is primarily a guided group tour. Upon consultation with your tour guides, the possibility to cycle on your own along recommended, suitable routes, may present itself.

Requirement to wear a helmet

On our tours you are obliged to wear a helmet. You are strongly encouraged to bring your own (well-fitted) helmet. At any time a cycling tour can replace a boat trip or vice versa. The daily program is shaped by weather conditions and the relevant captain’s decisions.

Bringing children

We believe that only children in a good physical condition and with a minimum age of 10 and previous bicycle tour experience are able to master the bike-tours on their own strength. Please note that the minimum height for a rental bike is 1.50 m (4.11 ft.).

Please bring your personal belongings in foldable travel bags. Please avoid hard protective cases. They will be too heavy to store within your cabin.

Payment on Board

Cash only! No cards accepted.

Language aboard

Due to our international audience all Islandhopping tours are conducted bilingually, in English and German.
