Sail & Bike Wadden Sea (unguided)

Sail & Bike Wadden Sea (unguided) (8 Days/7 Nights, approx. 250 km )

Board the Mare fan Fryslân, the Wapen fan Fryslân, or the Leafde fan Fryslân, and explore the Wadden Sea on the most luxurious sailing ships in the Ijsselmeer region. A world dominated by the forces of nature where sand and water determine almost everything during the changeover from low to high tide and where islands of all sizes, strung like pearls on a chain, protect the shallow waters of the Wadden Sea and its mudflats. Sailing tours are something very special enabling us to feel the freedom, the wind and salt on our skin! It’s a bit like discovering the seas as a modern-day explorer.

During this tour we will explore the open waters of the northern Ijsselmeer and the adjacent Wadden Sea by sailing ship and bike. The highlights of the tour are visits to the North Sea islands of Texel and Terschelling and their beautiful natural surroundings, small villages and long sandy beaches that you can explore by bicycle. The Frisian Islands and the coastal regions of Northern Holland and Friesland are a true “El Dorado” for cyclists.

Good to know: All of the listed tours in Holland are operated by a partner tour operator, experts in the field, and can vary in their execution in comparison to traditional Islandhopping tours. A shared similarity is the accommodation on the boat, bike tours during the day – with exception to the guided tours – however are self-guided with the support of provided maps and signposts.

Attention: This web page has been updated for the season 2019. Changes in the itinerary as well as the accomplishments may vary in comparison to the season 2018.

Itinerary

1st Day (Sat) Enkhuizen (Embarkation)

Individual journey to Enkhuizen. Embarkation and check-in you on board is from 2 pm near the beautiful center of Enkhuizen and close to the railway station. After unpacking your luggage the skipper will join you for an aperitif before giving you a rundown of what to expect on the journey, details about the ship and also about safety measures to be taken on board. In the evening take a stroll through the historical center of Enkhuizen, a quaint town that was the home of the Dutch merchant fleet during the Golden Age of The Netherlands. Enjoy your first night on board in Enkhuizen on the western bank of the IJsselmeer.

2nd Day (Sun) Enkhuizen - Medemblik (aprx. 14 - 22 mi./24 - 37 km), Sailing: Medemblik - Den Oever

Today you can cycle the first leg of the trip along the Ijsselmeer coast through the beautiful polder landscape to Medemblik. After the bike tour the ship will sail further on to Den Oever. Depending on the weather in the evening the ship will sail across the Wadden Sea (part of the North Sea) to the island of Texel.

3rd Day (Mon) Texel, Roundtrip Texel from/to Oudeschild (up to aprx. 29 mi./46 km)

The island of Texel is a cyclist’s dream destination with its varied scenery, well signposted cycle paths and picturesque villages. Our suggestion is to complete a round trip cycling tour of the largest of the Dutch North Sea islands on the easy-to-follow Thijsseroute (24 mi./40 km) that takes you via a number of villages, the seal sanctuary station “Ecomare” and a traditional beer brewery near the harbor of Oudeschild.

4th Day (Tue) Texel – Terschelling, Sailing about 5 to 6 hrs

Today you will enjoy sailing on your ship – if the tide and weather fit – to the island of Terschelling. As you sail your way through the sandbanks of the Wadden Sea, keep a lookout for seals on the sandbars. In the afternoon the ship will arrive at the island of Terschelling, which features a number of picturesque villages situated between the polder and sand dunes along its 30 km expanse. While sailing you will enjoy an extensive lunch on board. No dinner will be served tonight, to enable you to explore the island, but you can make yourself a picnic meal or try one of the nice restaurants at Terschelling (not incl.).

5th Day (Wed) Terschelling (up to 44 mi./70 km) - Sailing: Terschelling – Harlingen

While the previous day was all about sailing, today is all about cycling. Terschelling has plenty to offer its cycle tourists: nature and culture, 44 mi./70 km of cycling tracks and 4 beautiful villages. West Terschelling is the largest village on the island and features a number of nice shops and pubs. The standout landmark on the island is the 400 year-old lighthouse “Brandaris” that can be seen from well off in the distance. Also worth visiting is the heath land of “Boschplaat” which will captivate you with its mudflats, beaches and dunes. You might even spot ducks, black-winged stilts, large colonies of spoonbills and great black-backed gulls. After a day of cycling, you can relax in comfort of the boat once you have arrived back on board. In the late afternoon the ship will cross the Wadden Sea and sail to Harlingen, the most important harbor city of the province of Friesland.

6th Day (Thu) Harlingen – Franeker –Makkum (aprx. 30 – 36 mi./48 - 58 km)

Via Franeker, with the famous planetarium of Eise Eisinga, you cycle through the beautiful wide Frisian countryside along several rural villages to the small harbor of Makkum on the eastern bank of the IJsselmeer. If you take the long cycling trip, you will also visit Bolsward, one of the Eleven Frisian Cities.

7th Day (Fri) Makkum – Stavoren (aprx. 19 – 30 mi./30 - 48 km), Sailing to Enkhuizen

From Makkum you cycle to Stavoren. The short route goes via the old trading town of Hindeloopen. The local art of painting – a type of traditional decorative painting – is quite famous. Apart from this you’ll find the First Frisian Museum of Ice Skating in Hindeloopen. The long tour runs along several Frisian lakes and exposes you to a variety of landscapes. From Stavoren the ship will set sail to cross the IJsselmeer to Enkhuizen in the late afternoon.

8th Day (Sat) Enkhuizen (Farewell/Disembarkation)

Disembarkation after breakfast until 09:30 am: End of your trip. A beautiful journey full of new experiences has come to an end. Individual journey home or extended stay.

Ships

Mare fan Fryslan

The Mare fan Fryslân was built in 1960 as a freight ship and was renovated completely in 2006. Since 2007 this classic schooner has been used as a beautiful, almost extravagant, three-mast sailing ship at home on Dutch waters. Facilities: On the lower deck there is an air conditioned saloon lined with wooden panelling that doubles as the ship’s restaurant. Next to the saloon you will find the wheelhouse fitted with a bar. A major feature of this room is the large panoramic window that offers a breath-taking view over the water. On the lower deck there are 12 comfortable 2-bed cabins (floor area of about 10 m², 2 floor-level single beds 90 x 200 cm), 1 junior suite with a small corner sitting area (about 12 m²) as well as a 1-bed cabin with bunk beds (floor area of about 7 m²). In the 2-bed cabins and the junior-suite it is also possible to arrange to have 3 beds – a Pullman bed/fold-down bed. All the cabins have a private shower/WC/wash basin and ventilation system. The wooden upper deck offers adequate seating and an outdoor bar. The sails on the schooner can be operated either by hand or electrically.

Wapen fan Fryslan

The 55 metres Wapen fan Fryslân is the largest two-mast schooner sailing on Dutch waterways. In 1965 the schooner was launched as a freight ship that transported all kinds of freight throughout the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. In 2003 the ship was completely transformed into a luxury passenger ship. On board this marvellous five star ship you are guaranteed to revel in the warm and luxurious atmosphere. On deck there is a large pilothouse, an intimate and stylish bar and a seating area. The panoramic windows offer a perfect 360 degree view over the water and the ship. The sundeck features deckchairs and offers plenty of seating. The large salon, which doubles as the restaurant, is characterised by its luxurious appearance and flexible furnishing. All 12 spacious cabins (aprx. 10 m²) have two separate box spring beds (90 x 200 m) that can be easily transformed into a double bed. Each cabin has its own shower, toilet, wash basin, a folding bed that can be used as a third bed and a porthole that can be opened.

Leafde fan Fryslan

The LEAFDE FAN FRYSLN, an imposing, three-masted barquentine, taking its maiden voyage for Sail & Bike travel in 2018 and is managed by its owner/operators, Joris and Rinske de Wit. For many years, they have run the MARE FAN FRYSLN, a three-masted clipper. The interior of this luxury ship can best be described as refined. The ship has 12 well-appointed twin cabins with two separate beds, and one single cabin. A third (bunk-)bed can be added in some cabins. All cabins have an en-suite bathroom with shower, wash basin and toilet. A porthole can be opened in every cabin. Sumptuous meals are carefully prepared in the restaurant and the ship’s full-service, cosy bar is fully stocked. The wheelhouse is equipped with a well-appointed seating area and the best views over the water are available here and on deck. The LEAFDE FAN FRYSLN can comfortably carry 25 (max. 30) guests and is 50 meters (aprx. 165 ft.) long and seven meters (aprx. 23 ft.) wide with a sail surface of 760 m² (aprx. 2,500 sq. ft.).

Things to note

Partner Tour Operator & Itinerary changes

Good to know: All our tours in Holland are operated by a partner tour operator, experts in the field, and can vary in their execution in comparison to traditional Islandhopping tours. A shared similarity is the accommodation on the boat, bike tours during the day – with exception to the guided tours – however are self-guided with the support of provided maps and signposts.

While a little bit of adventure is part of every Sail & Bike tour, departure and arrival days as well as the location – Enkhuizen – are fixed. Everything else depends on the strength and direction of the winds. The crew does whatever they can to run the program according to plan and to offer you a fascinating, varied and active week, in which nature and culture play a major part. It is however possible that departure times and the time spent on the water – and even the order of the program itself – has to be adjusted. Anyway, enjoy the ride and the elements!

Cancellation Conditions

As this tour is operated in cooperation with a partner tour operator, the cancelation conditions vary to those of Radurlaub Zeitreisen GmbH (Islandhopping). You can withdraw from the travel contract up until the beginning of the trip. Your cancellation is valid when your written notification reaches us.

– More than 60 days prior to beginning the trip: 20%
– 59 – 42 days prior to beginning the trip: 30 %
– 41 – 28 days prior to beginning the trip: 60 %
– 27 – 1 days prior to beginning the trip: 90 %

If you cancel on the starting day of the trip or if you do not appear for the start of the trip, we charge the full trip price. If you miss the start of the trip or are prevented from traveling due to incomplete travel documents, this will be considered as a cancellation.

Reservation changes are handled the same way as cancellations. For changing your reservation, we will charge 50 € changing fee for changes made 28 days or more before the beginning of the trip. Any later changes (if possible) will need to be handled as a cancellation and new registration. Cancellation and reservation change fees are due immediately.

Accomodation

During these Frisian Sea tours you will travel – depending on the departure date – on board one of the three largest and most luxurious sailing ships on the Ijsselmeer, the beautiful three-masted schooner Mare fan Fryslân (max. 28 guests), her sister ship the two-masted schooner Wapen fan Fryslân (max. 24 guests) or the imposing three-masted barquentine Leafde fan Fryslân (max. 25 – 30 guests).

Please do not forget that the ship is your hotel as well as a machine, which has to be maintained and operated – day and night. A certain level of noise is therefore inevitable.

Catering on board

Full board (7 x breakfast, 5 x packed lunches/1 x lunch on board, 6 x dinner on board/1 x packed dinner on Terschelling). Lactose- and gluten-free catering is available for a 50 € surcharge and must be communicated prior to the departure date. Vegan cuisine is not available on this cruise.

Language

Due to our international audience all Islandhopping tours are conducted bilingually, in English and German.

Good to know

Luggage: Please bring your personal belongings in foldable travel bags. Please avoid hard protective cases. They will be too heavy to store within your cabin.
Payment on Board: cash only

Weight Limit of Bicycles Brought on Board

Please be aware, that we have a weight limit of 22 kg (48.5 lb), if you bring your own biycle/e-bike on board of one of our boats. This limit is important to protect the health of our guides/crew members, than they have to lift the bikes on board.

If we consider it necessary, we will check the weight on site. If the weight limit is exceeded, we reserve the right to refuse taking the bike on board.

Requirements of the bike rides: Level 1-2

Not too difficult tours with generally flat stages of 15 to 37,5 miles (25 to 60 km). Printed instructions and detailed maps for daily individual bike tours are provided as well as daily instructions. Long and steep ascents hardly ever occur, however, a hilly countryside with regular ups and downs must be considered. Depending on the wind direction we must accept a strong headwind from time to time. Helmet use is mandatory on all cycle tours (even if cyclists are not obligated by law to wear a bike helmet in the Netherlands). You are strongly encouraged to bring your own (well-fitted) helmet, than rental helmets are NOT available. You are free to set aside a half or full day to swim or spend on board the boat, instead of taking a planned cycle tour.

Bringing Children

We believe that only children in a good physical condition and with a minimum age of 10 and previous bicycle tour experience are able to master the cycle tours on their own strength.
