Sail & E-Bike Lofoten

Sail & E-Bike Lofoten

(8 Days/7 Nights, approx. 330 km )

This sail & e-bike tour on the Lofoten is the most northern of all Islandhopping trips. Experience a region where the sun never sets during the summer by e-bike and onboard the tall ship Meander. The islands of Lofoten and Vesterålen, characterised by their souring mountains, are a natural beauty unique in Europe. Picturesque harbour towns with typical boathouses alternate with fjords, rivers, lakes, and waterfalls. Although there are a few opportunities to experience the art and culture the region has to offer on this tour, the trip is above all a journey through rugged landscapes on extended cycling tours and unforgettable sailing experiences through breath-taking nature.

Along the way, cosy coffee houses entice with the promise of a tasty waffle and a hot drink. The temperature varies between 10°C and 20°C (50°F – 68°F), and though the white sandy beaches with their Caribbean blue water may look inviting, only suffers and the daring will venture into the clear, extremely refreshing water. By e-bike we travel through the home of the trolls and along the secluded, panoramic roads of the north. This tour takes place three times, alternating direction from Moskenes to Andenes and from Andenes to Moskenes.

Itinerary

FROM MOSKENES TO ANDENES - 1st Day (Sat) Arrival in Moskenes (Embarkation)

Individual arrival in Moskenes (via Bodø Airport and then by ferry). You should check in on the Meander, in Moskenes Harbour, on Saturday evening at the latest. Here you meet your tour guide who will give a first briefing about the ship and the days ahead. Afterwards everyone has dinner together onboard.

2nd Day (Sun) Moskenes – Å – Nusfjord – Ballstad (55 km)

After breakfast, we begin our first cycling tour which takes us to the small town of Å, just 5km away at the “end of the world”; the southernmost tip of the Lofoten Islands. After our visit to Å, we continue on by e-bike to the picturesque museum village of Nusfjord. Framed by spectacular rocks, this is arguably the most enchanting fishing village in Lofoten. Sitting on the shores of the Bottelvika Fjord, the colourful cottages nestle into the landscape like a toy village at the foot of the towering Flakstadøy Mountains. Here there is plenty of time to take a stroll through the village before sailing on the Meander to Ballstad on the neighbouring island of Vestvagøy.

3rd Day (Mon) Ballstad – Stamsund (37km with an optional further 23km possible)

Today’s cycling tour first leads from Ballstad to the turquoise blue bay of Hauckland (19km). Along the coast, a number of triangular wooden structures can be seen, which are used by the locals for the production of dried fish. After a break in this little slice of paradise, we cycle on to Mortsund (18km), where it is up to you to decide if you would like to continue on to Stamsund (23km) or whether you would prefer to make this section of the trip on board the Meander. Stamsund impresses with its spectacular nature and has also earned itself the reputation of being an artists’ village: Over the last few years, a number of artists, painters, and sculptors have settled here in the old fishermen’s cottages, exhibiting their works in small studios.

4th Day (Tues) Stamsund - Henningsvær - Svolvær (59 km)

Today’s e-bike tour leads us predominantly along panoramic roads from Stamsund to Henningsvær on the island of Gimsøy. Our intermediate destination of Henningsvær, also known as the “Venice of the North”, delights with its authentic fishing village charm. Here we board the Meander and sail to Svolvær, capital of the Lofoten Islands and one of the most important harbours and cultural centres in the heart of the archipelago. The picturesque harbour town on Vestfjord has a centuries-old seafaring tradition and attracts mountaineers from all over the world every summer with its landmark, the striking rock formation Svolværgeita.

5th Day (Wed) Svolvær - Fiskebøl - Melbu - Stokmarknes (63 km, with an optional further 15-25km possible)

From Svolvær we cycle to Fiskebøl (63 km). Here we board the Meander, which takes us to Melbu on the neighbouring island of Hadseløya. In Melbu you can decide if you would prefer to continue on to Stokmarknes by e-bike (15 or 25 km) or rather sail there on the Meander. Stokmarknes is considered the birthplace of the legendary Hurtigruten, as it was here that Richard With founded the Vesterålen Steamship Company in 1881. Accordingly, the town is still one of the harbour stops on the cruise route and it is home to the Hurtigruten house, which is both a hotel and a museum.

6th Day (Thurs) Stokmarnes – Sortland – Risøyhamn (55 km)

Today we cycle along quiet roads from Stokmarknes to Sortland (55 km). The area is characterised by its diverse landscape from mountains rising directing out of the sea, to spectacular fjords, and secluded mountain valleys. Sortland, also known as “the blue city”, is situated in the middle of hundreds of islands in a beautiful archipelago. Here, among the unique scenery, we once again board the Meander for a crossing to Risøyhamn on the island of Andøya.

7th Day (Fri) Risøyhamn – Andenes (approx. 60 km)

On our final day we can look forward to a panoramic e-bike tour along the beautiful west coast of the island of Andøyas, which takes us from Risøyhamn to Andenes. Andenes, situated at the northern most tip of Vesterålen, is home to a wonderful lighthouse and a polar museum. It is also an ideal whale watching spot. It is here that our eventful week comes to an end with a final evening meal on board the Meander.

8th Day Andenes (Disembarkation)

Either extend your stay in Norway or return home from Andenes airport.

FROM ANDENES TO MOSKENES - 1st Day (Sat) Arrival in Andenes (Embarkation)

Individual arrival in Andenes (Andenes Airport). You should check in on the Meander, in Andenes Harbour, on Saturday evening at the latest. Here you meet your tour guide who will give a first briefing about the ship and the days ahead. Afterwards everyone has dinner together onboard.

2nd Day (Sun) Andenes - Risøyhamn (60 km)

Our first cycling tour takes us along the beautiful west coast of Andøya from the northernmost tip of Andenes to the southernmost point of Risøyhamn. Here we board the Meander and can look forward to a wonderful sail to Sortland, the “blue city”. This town is as unique as it is beautiful, surrounded by hundreds of islands in an incredible archipelago.

3rd Day (Mon) Sortland – Stokmarknes – Melbu – Fiskebøl (55 km, with an optional further 15-25km possible)

Today we cycle along quiet roads from Sortand to Stokmarknes (55 km). There will be time to take a lovely stroll through the town before either sailing on board the Meander to Melbu or cycling the extra leg by e-bike (15 or 25km). Should you choose to cycle, the boat will meet us in Melbu before crossing to Fiskebøl.

4th Day (Tues) Fiskebøl – Henningsvær (58 km)

Our tour today begins in Fiskebøl leading us to Svolvær, the capital of the Lofoten Islands and one of the most important harbours and cultural centres in the heart of the archipelago. The picturesque harbour town on the Vestfjord has a centuries-old seafaring tradition and attracts mountaineers from all over the world every summer with its landmark, the striking rock formation Svolværgeita. Here we break for lunch before cycling on to Henningsvær, a wonderful fishing village, known also as the “Venice of the North”.

5th Day (Wed) Henningsvær – Stamsund – Mortsund (59 km, with an optional further 23km possible)

Today’s tour takes us from Henningsvær on the island of Gimsøy to Stamsund (59 km) where the Meander awaits our arrival. Stamsund impresses with its spectacular nature and has also earned itself the reputation of being an artists’ village: Over the last few years, a number of artists, painters, and sculptors have settled here in the old fishermen’s cottages, exhibiting their works in small studios. After visiting Stamsund you may decide whether you would prefer to reach the day’s final destination Mortsund by boat or if you would like to cycle there from Stamsund (23 km).

6th Day (Thurs) Mortsund – Ballstad - Nusfjord (37 km)

Today’s e-bike tour takes us from Mortsund to the turquoise blue Haukland Bay (18 km). After a break in this little slice of paradise, we cycle on to Ballstadt (19km), where we meet the Meander and sail on to the picturesque museum village of Nusfjord. Framed by spectacular rocks, this is arguably the most enchanting fishing village in Lofoten. Sitting on the shores of the Bottelvika Fjord, the colourful cottages nestle into the landscape like a toy village at the foot of the towering Flakstadøy Mountains.

7th Day (Fri) Nusfjord – Å – Moskenes (55 km)

Our final bike ride leads us on another spectacular scenic route to Å, a town with one of the shortest place names in the world, at the “end of the world” on the southern tip of the Lofoten Islands (50 km). After visiting Å we continue by e-bike for another 5 km to Moskenes. It is here that our eventful week comes to an end with a final evening meal on board the Meander.

8th Day (Sat) Moskenes (Disembarkation)

Either extend your stay in Norway or take the ferry from Moskenes to Bodø (approx. 3 hours), from where you fly home.

Ships

Tall ship Meander

The 30 m long, 6.70 m wide Meander was built in 1946 in Hamburg Finkenwerder as a fishing cutter and was used in this capacity until the 1990s. In 1995 the vessel was converted into a seaworthy passenger sailing ship. The traditional rigging with a total of 400 m2 of sails and a robust hull make this two-mast staysail schooner a particularly seaworthy ship. As the sails are easy to handle, even people without sailing experience can actively participate in sailing the ship. Up to twelve guests can be comfortably accommodated on board in the six cosy cabins below deck. The best place on board is the large sitting and dining area on the aft deck of the Meander. The fore and middle deck offer additional, comfortable seating. In the deckhouse there is also a cosy saloon with a separate kitchen and an outside view.

        Things to note

        Itinerary changes

We reserve the right to make changes to the itinerary, depending on weather conditions and organizational requirements.

E-Bike Level & Requirement to wear a helmet

Due to the varying lengths of the cycling tours and the fact that they lead through hilly terrain, a good basic level of fitness is required for this trip. Endurance is an advantage if you want to cycle the entire distance every day of the tour (up to 80 km) by e-bike. Main roads are avoided where possible. Some parts of the tour are however ridden on the E10. The E10 is a main road and can be quite frequented by passing traffic from time to time. Please ride cautiously when riding with traffic.

Helmets are mandatory on all bike tours. Please bring your own helmet, rental helmets are available on a limited number (reservation required).

        E-Bikes

This tour is offered exclusively for e-bikes, so that the routes are managed in a reasonable time and not with too much effort by all participants.  The use of a high-quality rental e-bike is included in the base tour price.

        Children

We believe that only children in a good physical condition and with a minimum age of 16 and previous bicycle tour experience are able to master the cycle tours on their own strength. Please note that the minimum height for a rental e-bike is 1.50 m (4.5 ft.) for e-bikes.

        Characteristic features - Tallship journeys

Our Tallships mostly do not fit into small fishing harbors and therefore spend from time to time their nights on anchor. This means that a dinghy transfer is necessary to get to land. Additionally a tidal difference may effect accessibility of the boat ain.

In some cases it may be necessary to climb a ladder to get on/off the boat or that the use of a dinghy/tender might be necessary for embarkation/disembarkation. Surefootedness and a certain degree of agility are required to get on and off the boat. Needless to say, our tour guides will lend you a helping hand. In general: Wind, swell and tidal differences have a significant influence on a Tallship journey.

Please do not forget that the ship is your hotel as well as a machine, which has to be maintained and operated – day and night. A certain level of noise is therefore inevitable.

        Language

Due to our international audience all Islandhopping tours are conducted bilingually, in English and German.

        Catering

We start the day with a rich breakfast and in the evening, we can enjoy a warm meal on board the ship. During the day we stop at typical, cosy cafés (if possible). Nevertheless, it is advisable to buy some snacks such as muesli bars etc. wherever we spend the night for the bike tour on the following day. This ensures that you can refuel in case your energy begins to taper.
