Would you like to spend a few days in the green, hilly landscape of northern Croatia before or after your Islandhopping tour? Are you looking for a program that offers you both organised activities as well as enough free time to explore the Croatian hinterland? Then we recommend our three-day extension program in Trakošćan and Varaždin which includes two nights’ accommodation with breakfast, a guided tour of Trakošćan Castle, a guided tour of the baroque town of Varaždin including an organ concert and transfers between your two hotels.
Would you like to spend a few more days in Croatia before or after your Islandhopping tour? Then we recommend extending your stay on the island of Krk, which is one of the most diverse islands in the Mediterranean. Vineyards, olive groves, extensive forests and ancient stone walls characterize the landscape. There are many beautiful beaches and in Rudine you can visit an interesting stalactite cave. The town of Baška with its surrounding lunar landscape is also worth a visit.
Are you intrigued to see more of Croatia? We recommend extending your stay with our 2-day extension program in the Croatian capital, Zagreb. The old town, built by the Imperial and Royal Monarchy, boasts many impressive buildings. The additional program includes transfers, hotel accommodation, a city tour and dinner in a typical konoba.
Due to our international audience all Islandhopping tours are conducted bilingually, in English and German.
We reserve the right to make changes to the planned route due to changing wind and weather conditions, and where necessary for organizational purposes. You are free to set aside a day to swim, relax or spend time at the hotel, instead of taking part in the planned bike tour.
Easy to moderate daily tours with stages of about 15 to 31 mi./25 to 50 km and 980 to 2,952 ft./300 to 900 m of elevation gain. Istria is a mountain biker’s paradise with a range of trails from easy to moderate to choose from. We ride on mainly unblocked flow trails, wide natural paths and quiet asphalt roads. It should not be required to carry your bike over any blocked paths. Wearing a protective bike helmet is mandatory – we recommend bringing your own helmet with you. Rental helmets are available in limited numbers on board (reservation required). Instead of taking part on a MTB tour, you are also welcome to either join the hybrid bike group or to remain on/near the boat. The daily tour program is dictated by the weather and the decisions of the captain.
To ensure that you are well prepared for your bike tour with Islandhopping and know what technical difficult level to expect, we have created a classification for all single trails that could be ridden on our tours. The difficulty levels included in our classification coincide with the Single Trail Scale which can be found here
Blue (easy, S0 – S1): small obstacles such as small roots, small stones, some erosion, gradients of up to 40 %, loose surfaces, tight corners but no hairpins, obstacles can be rolled over. Skilful braking and weight shift required, riding while standing.
Red (medium, S2): loose surfaces, larger stones and roots, steps and shallow stairs, gradients of up to 70 %, light hairpins. Constant readiness to brake, shift of centre weight to overcome obstacles, accurate braking, consistent body tension required.
Black (heavy, S3 – S5): blocked single trails, many large boulders, and roots, smooth/slippery surfaces, loose scree slopes, large steps/drops, extremely steep gradients of over 70 %, tight hairpins. Expert level of bike control/handling required.
Helmets are mandatory on our bike tours. It is advised to bring your own, well fitted, helmet with you as our rental helmet numbers are limited (reservation required). Furthermore, we recommend riders to carry arm and leg protectors during the bike tours.
On our regular bike tours the riding pace is determined by the cyclists on regular bikes. We ask guests who have reserved an e-MTB to be mindful of this and to acknowledge that the regular cyclists need time to rest and longer to climb the hills. We thank you for your understanding.
The tour which you have booked requires a bike with a fully functional set of gears. Islandhopping can offer you high quality, fully serviced rental bikes perfect for the terrain of this tour.
Should you however wish to bring your own hybrid or MTB with you, please make sure to check the condition of your breaks, gears, and tires and don’t forget to bring along a puncture repair kit and the essential spare parts for your bike (e.g. brake pads and tubes). Your bike should be in prefect mechanical working order.
We do not allow private e-bikes on board of our boats. This decision has been made due to health and safety regulations. In addition, e-bike batteries cannot be transported on aircrafts. If you wish to ride an e-bike for the duration of your tour, please get in touch with us about the rental options.
We do not recommend bringing along private road bikes, as the thin tires are not suitable for some of the road surfaces encountered on the tours.
Liability disclaimer: Radurlaub Zeitreisen GmbH. Will not be held liable for any damages caused to private bikes during loading, unloading or other logistical handling thereof.
The on-board chef is a member of the crew and prepares the breakfast and one or two warm meals a day. The catering consists of 2 x full board and 5 x half board. Catering starts with the dinner on the arrival day and ends with the breakfast on the departure day.
