Experience la dolce vita: Sail and bike in beautiful Italy

There is much to look forward to on this Sail & Bike tour through Tuscany, as you cycle in the footsteps of the Etruscans, enjoying the Italian ‘dolce vita’! The cypress, vineyards, and olive trees that cover the rolling hills characterize the typical Tuscan landscape. Picturesque medieval towns with small, cobbled streets and colourful houses invite curious visitors to linger. Sandy beaches and remoted bays beckon for a swim in the glistening water. The Atlantis as our floating home for the week allows for a carefree travel experience, sailing with us from one place to the next. Her giant sails create a true seafaring ambience. Tuscany by Sail & Bike is the perfect all-round holiday for bike lovers.

TO NOTE: This tour takes place prallel to our MTB-Tour on the same boat. This is perfect for travellers who wish to spend their holiday together, but do not share the same riding preference.

1st Day
(Fri)
Arrival in Porto Santo Stefano
(Embarkation)
Individual arrival in Porto St. Stefano, a wonderful, lively harbour town on the northern side of the Monte Argentario peninsula. The boat is ready to be boarded at 6 pm. Should you arrive earlier, you are welcome to leave your luggage on board from 2 pm onwards. A short stroll through the medieval old town, painted in a wash of pink and beige, will quickly make you realize that you are now on holiday! We recommend a walk to the Fortezza Spagnola on the hill above the old town, built in the 17th century to protect the city. The first evening meal on board is a great way to get to know your fellow travellers, guides, and crew. Overnight in Porto St. Stefano.
2nd Day (Sat) Monte Argentario - Talamone
(aprx. 40 km/200 Hm)
Our first bike tour takes us from Porto St. Stefano to the historic town of Orbetello. With a little bit of luck, we will have the chance to admire the spectacular flamboyance of flamingos in the WWF natural oasis Laguna di Orbetello. Afterwards our cycle tour leads to the ruins of the fortified Roman town of Cosa and then through the Duna Feniglia nature reserve, with its enchantingly beautiful pine forest. The tour continues predominantly along cycle paths back to Porto Santo Stefano where the Atlantis awaits our arrival for a crossing to Talamone.
3rd Day (Sun) Talamone – Porto Azzurro
(Sailing Day)
After breakfast, it’s time for a sailing voyage! A long crossing to Elba awaits us. If the winds are favourable, guests receive a briefing on sailing and can help set sail together. After Sicily and Sar-dinia, Elba is the third largest island in Italy and it impresses with its charm, lush nature and rich history. Lunch will be served on board and guests have time for a swim before we arrive in the sheltered bay of Porto Azzuro. In the evening, you can explore the charming harbour town.
4th Day (Mon) Porto Azzuro – Capoliveri – Porto Azzurro (aprx. 28 km/ 400 Hm)
Today’s tour of the multi-facetted island of Elba takes us to the lively town of Capoliveri, where we soak up the Italian charm and enjoy a delicious ice cream and coffee. The tour continues along a beautiful panoramic road, followed by a lunch break, before taking us back to Porto Azur-ro. In the evening, island hopping invites us to a wine tasting.
5th Day (Tue) Porto Azzuro –Enfola Bay
(aprx. 40 km/600 Hm)
Today we can look forward to a somewhat longer tour from Porto Azzuro to the north of the island of Elba. After a coffee break in Rio nell' Elba we head to one of the most beautiful viewpoints of the trip. From Voltereio we can look out over the beautiful bay of Portoferreio, the capital of the island. After lunch, we cycle the last few kilometres to the bay of Enfola.
6th Day (Wed) Marciana Marina – Marina di Campo
(aprx. 30 km/700 Hm)
Today the queen’s stage awaits us! We cycle over the island, visiting the mountain village of Marciana along the way before reaching the highest point of the tour at Monte Perone. From here we are rewarded with a wonderful decent to the village of San Piero in Campo, where we can enjoy a delicious lunch with a view of our ship. Once back on the ship there is plenty of time for a refreshing swim directly from the boat. Afterwards, the sails are set, and we head for Isola Giglio, an island located in the very south of the Tuscan Archipelago. This Italian jewel is home to mountains, forest, untouched nature, and crystal-clear sea!
7th Day
(Thu)
Island Giglio – Porto St. Stefano
(aprx. 15 km/400 Hm)
We begin our cycling tour in Campese on the west of the island. The destination for today is the medieval town of Giglio Castello, enthroned like an impregnable castle high up on the island of Giglio. A quick descent takes us down to Giglio Porto. On the crossing to Porto St. Stefano, let the sea air blow around your nose again and review an eventful week of sailing and cycling. Your trip ends in an atmospheric way during the last evening on board.
8th Day
(Fri)
Porto St. Stefano
(Disembarkation)
Departure at 9 am after breakfast followed either by an extended stay in Tuscany or an individual journey home.

Accommodation

Atlantis (Tall Ships)

The Atlantis is a guaranteed eye catcher in every harbor. Built in 1905 and christened Elbe 2, the Atlantis served faithfully as a light vessel in the North Sea, Germany. Afterwards she was elaborately restorated as a tallship for passenger cruises.

The renovation featured a classy salon, a spacious upper deck including seats and a cocktail bar as well as 16 comfortable air conditioned guest cabins including a shower and WC. A true highlight and centerpiece of the Atlantis is the open air bar, where the dedicated crew conjure creative beverages and cocktails for the guests. Mealtimes are…

Important information

Spoken Language

Due to our international audience all Islandhopping tours are conducted bilingually, in English and German.

Itinerary changes

We reserve the right to make changes to the route in the case of changing wind and weather conditions as well as for reasons of organizational necessity.

Requirements

Hybrid Bike Level 2-3

The cycle routes require an advanced level of fitness from the participants. The daily routes have a length of 12,5 – 28 mi./20 – 45 km. They lead through hilly or mountainous areas and will be completed without any time-constraints. The cycle tours consist of up to 660 – 2,300 ft./200 – 700 m of elevation collectively. There are also some extended climbs where walking your bicycle is of course permitted. Most of the roads are asphalted although we will also ride on gravel roads. Your tour guide informs you each day about the tour details. You are free to set aside a half or full day to swim or spend on board the boat, instead of taking a planned cycle tour.

Bringing private bikes & exclusion of private e-bikes

The tour which you have booked requires a bike with a fully functional set of gears. Islandhopping can offer you high quality, fully serviced rental bikes perfect for the terrain of this tour.

Should you however wish to bring your own hybrid bicycle with you, please make sure to check the condition of your breaks, gears, and tires and don’t forget to bring along a puncture repair kit and the essential spare parts for your bike (e.g. brake pads and spare tubes). Your bike should be in prefect mechanical working order.

We do not allow private e-bikes on board of our boats. This decision has been made due to health and safety regulations. If you wish to ride an e-bike for the duration of your tour, please get in touch with us about the rental options.

We do not recommend bringing along private road bikes, as the thin tires are not suitable for some of the road surfaces encountered on the tours.

Liability disclaimer: Radurlaub Zeitreisen GmbH. Will not be held liable for any damages caused to private bikes during loading, unloading or other logistical handling thereof.

Group riding pace

On our regular cycling tours the riding pace is determined by the cyclists on regular bicycles. We ask guests who have reserved an e-bike to be mindful of this and to acknowledge that also the regular cyclists need time to rest and longer to climb the hills. Thank you for your understanding.

Requirement to wear a helmet

Helmet use is mandatory on all cycle tours. You are strongly encouraged to bring your own (well-fitted) helmet.

Children

We believe that only children in a good physical condition and of a minimum age of 10 and with previous cycle tour experience are able to master the cycle-tours on their own strength. Please note that the minimum height for a rental bike is 1.50 m (5 ft.).

Noise on board

Please do not forget that the ship is your hotel as well as a machine, which has to be maintained and operated – day and night. A certain level of noise is therefore inevitable.

Characteristic features of Harbours & Places to drop anchor

Our Tallship mostly does not fit into small fishing harbors and therefore spends the majority of their nights on anchor. This means that a dinghy transfer is necessary to get to land. Surefootedness and a certain degree of agility are required to get on and off the boat. Needless to say, our tour guides will lend you a helping hand. In general: Wind, swell and tidal differences have a significant influence on a Tallship journey.

Catering on board

This tour includes half board. Due to the differing daily programs, some days will have no warm meals included while others will include both lunch and dinner on board. Breakfast is available on board every day.

Luggage

Please bring your personal belongings in foldable travel bags. Please avoid hard protective cases. They will be too heavy to store within your cabin.

Payment on board

Payment by card is not possible on board

Travel recommendation for groups with varying biking interests (MTB & hybrid cycling)

This tour takes place parallel to our MTB & Boat Highlights Tuscany tour on the same boat. One tour guide accompanies the mountain bikers whilst the other accompanies the hybrid cyclists. This is perfect for travelers who wish to spend their holiday together, but do not share the same riding style.

What Our Guests
Have To Say

This was my 4th trip with Inselhuepfen. The company is great to work with. The guides are always excellent. They offer trips in great destinations. I have chosen to ride an e bike on my last two trips. The bikes are in great shape!
The food was good and so was the accommodation.

Trip was excellent. Staff were kind, thoughtful, and accommodating. Guides were knowledgeable and patient. Cycling routes were well thought out. Safety was paramount. I might have reconsidered if I had known how challenging the rides would be, or opted for an ebike. I think that was not clearly evident on the information, so the level of cycling should be particularly highlighted.
