Sail & Bike – Highlights of Tuscany

Sail & Bike – Highlights of Tuscany

(8 Days/7 Nights, approx. 185 km , 2300 hm)

Italy – Summertime in the south! When you think of Tuscany a myriad of impressions flash through your mind: rolling hills, epic architecture, azure blue sea, the aromatic smell of herbs and citrus fruits, the melodic babble of the locals, and of course the fantastic cuisine and wine. Italy sooths the mind and soul!

Look forward to this sail & bike tour through Tuscany and its breathtaking scenery. Cycle in the footsteps of the Etruscans, and enjoy the Italian ‘Dolce Vita!’. Cypress trees, wine fields and olive trees spread across the rolling hills characterizing the typical Tuscan landscape. Picturesque medieval towns with small cobbled streets and colorful houses invite curious visitors. Beautiful sandy beaches and small bays beckon for a swim in the glistening blue water.

The Atlantis provides the travelling accommodation for a carefree travel experience from one place to the other and with its giant sails, provides a true seafaring ambience. There is nothing better than to jump into the sea directly from the deck of the boat, anchored in a quiet bay. Tuscany by sail & bike is the perfect all round happy cyclist holiday.

Our mountain bike tours Sail & MTB Tuscany is often operated parallel on the same boat as the hybrid bike tours. One tour guide will accompany the hybrid bike cyclists while the other will guide the MTB route. So, if you have a partner or friend who prefers off-road biking, just bring him along.

Please note: this is a new itinerary and is therefore subject to change. Also, the itinerary depends strongly on the wind conditions. Therefore, all harbors and anchorages must be flexibly adapted to the weather conditions on each trip. Understanding for flexibility within the tour program is kindly requested. Our Tallship Atlantis does not fit into small fishing harbors and therefore spend the majority of their nights on anchor. This means that a dinghy transfer is necessary to get to land.

Attention: This web page has been updated for the season 2020. Changes in the itinerary as well as the accomplishments may vary in comparison to the season 2019.

Changes to the itinerary

We reserve the right to make changes to the itinerary, depending on wind and weather conditions or organizational requirements. Depending on the direction of the prevailing winds, this tour can also take place in reverse order.

Requirements of the tour: Level 2 - 3

The cycle routes require an advanced level of fitness from the participants. The daily routes have a length of 12,5 – 34 mi./20 – 55 km. They lead through hilly or mountainous areas and will be completed without any time-constraints. The cycle tours consist of up to 985 – 1,970 ft/300 – 600 m of elevation collectively. There are also some extended climbs where walking your bicycle is of course permitted. Most of the roads are asphalted although we will also ride on gravel roads. Your tour guide informs you each day about the tour details. Helmet use is mandatory on all cycle tours. You are strongly encouraged to bring your own (well-fitted) helmet. Cycle helmets are available on board in limited number (on request). You are free to set aside a half or full day to swim or spend on board the boat, instead of taking a planned cycle tour.

Bringing children

We believe that only children in a good physical condition and with a minimum age of 10 and previous bicycle tour experience are able to master the cycle tours on their own strength. Please note that the minimum height for a rental bike is 1.30 m (4”3’).

This tour includes half board. Due to the differing daily programs, some days will have no warm meals included while others will include both lunch and dinner on board. Breakfast is available on board every day.

Good to know

Luggage: Please bring your personal belongings in foldable travel bags. Please avoid hard protective cases. They will be too large and heavy to store within your cabin.

Payment on Board: cash only

Characteristic features of Harbours & Places to drop anchor

Our Tallship mostly does not fit into small fishing harbors and therefore spend the majority of their nights on anchor. This means that a dinghy transfer is necessary to get to land. Surefootedness and a certain degree of agility are required to get on and off the boat. Needless to say, our tour guides will lend you a helping hand. In general: Wind, swell and tidal differences have a significant influence on a Tallship journey.

Bringing private bikes & EXCLUSION of private E-BIKES

The tour which you have booked requires a bike with a fully functional set of gears. Islandhopping can offer you high quality, fully serviced rental bikes perfect for the terrain of this tour.

Should you however wish to bring your own hybrid or MTB with you, please make sure to check the condition of your breaks, gears, and tires and don’t forget to bring along a puncture repair kit and the essential spare parts for your bike (e.g. brake pads and tubes). Your bike should be in prefect mechanical working order.

We do not allow private e-bikes on board of our boats. This decision has been made due to health and safety regulations. If you wish to ride an e-bike for the duration of your tour, please get in touch with us about the rental options.

We do not recommend bringing along private road bikes, as the thin tires are not suitable for some of the road surfaces encountered on the tours.

Liability disclaimer: Radurlaub Zeitreisen GmbH. Will not be held liable for any damages caused to private bikes during loading, unloading or other logisitical handling thereof.

Good to know

On our regular cycling tours the riding pace is determined by the cyclists on regular bicycles. We ask guests who have reserved an e-bike to be mindful of this and to acknowledge that also the regular cyclists need time to rest and longer to climb the hills. Thank you for your understanding.
